We Can’t Get No Sleep

Sleep – we all need it, we can’t function well without it and we spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping, or at least trying to.  Sleep changes occur at different stages of our lives right from birth to our older years. This can be down to new circumstances, body changes, aches and pains, or mental health issues such as anxiety, stress or depression.

At Yellow Door Therapy, we take a holistic approach to insomnia and other sleep problems.  Each of our therapies have methods to help people sleep better, depending on the root cause or causes of sleeplessness.

Here are 5 reasons you may struggle to sleep, and how we can help you combat these to get some good shut eye:

Aches and Pains

Trying to get comfortable enough to drift off can be near impossible when you have joint or muscle pain, no position feels good and suddenly it’s morning.  Osteopaths treat the body as a whole and use gentle manipulation to rebalance the body and encourage self-healing.  Using the same holistic method, physiotherapists carry out detailed assessments and use movement to get to the source of the injury and speed up recovery.

Pregnancy

For a women, there is not much else that changes your body in such a dramatic way than pregnancy.  As the baby develops, sleep patterns change due to hormones or physical adaptations.  A specialised pregnancy massage can help relieve tension, reduce anxiety and help you to relax into a deep sleep.  Acupuncture and Osteopathy are also known to help the body remain in prime condition from conception to birth, allowing the body to move and change with the pregnancy.

Menopause

Insomnia is a well known symptom of both peri-menopause and the menopause itself.  Night sweats, anxiety, hormonal changes and migraines can all make sleep feel a million miles away.  Cranial Sacral Therapy sessions help the body to realign and deal with these significant changes, which in turn can increase chances of a full night asleep.

Stress and Anxiety

We’ve all been there – one thought leads to another and before you know it you are in full-blown panic.  This does not often lead to an easy drift into dreamland.  For some this can occur night after night, resulting in simple daily tasks feeling gargantuan.  Talking to a non-biased professional can help to sort through issues that may be clogging up our thoughts and let us see them in a manageable way.  Often, saying the problem out loud can bring to the forefront any fears or stress, and having someone to listen who is discreet and not part of our direct circle can sometimes make the problem lighter.

Diet

Research into nutrition and how our bodies respond to our diets is ever-growing, and some of the evidence suggests that we can help our bodies deal with a variety of issues through what we put in.  Nutritional therapy looks at the body as a whole, and then deciphers what that individual may need more or less of in order to remain in optimal health as they experience life changes.  Sleeplessness can often be linked to our digestive system and insomnia may be a symptom of our bodies fighting against something that doesn’t sit right internally.

Solving our sleep problems can have a dramatic, positive effect on our lives.   Our collective of therapists at Yellow Door Therapies have treatments and programs ready to help you get out of the insomnia cycle and into blissful dreamland.
